Shape Up! For a Healthy and Independent Lifestyle

Stay strong. Stay active. Reduce your risk of falls.

Short URL: kingcounty.gov/ems/shape-up

Shape Up 50+ connects adults ages 50 and older with discounted exercise classes at participating community and senior centers throughout King County. Participants can receive a $10 discount or attend a limited selection of free group exercise classes at participating centers.

Regular physical activity can help you stay strong, improve balance and mobility, support overall health, and maintain independence as you age. Physical activity that includes strength and balance can also help reduce the risk of falls.

A group of four men of varying ethnicities and ages are performing a yoga pose in a park. The man in the foreground on the left is Caucasian, wearing a blue t-shirt and beige shorts, with his arms raised. To his right is a Black man in a yellow tank top and black shorts, also with arms raised. Next to him is a Caucasian man in a yellow t-shirt and white shorts, with his arms raised. The man furthest to the right is Asian, wearing a gray t-shirt and blue shorts, with his arms raised. They are all on a grassy field with trees and a bright sky in the background.

Why staying active matters

Staying active is an important part of healthy aging. Activities that improve strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance can help you maintain the physical abilities needed for everyday activities and may reduce your risks of falling.

The goal: Find an activity you enjoy and keep moving.

Participating in a group exercise class can be a way to build physical activity into your routine, meet others, and stay motivated.
