Eastside Interceptor Section 8 rehabilitation

The Eastside Interceptor Section 8 Rehabilitation Project will repair 4,800 feet of a large wastewater pipeline in Bellevue that is nearing the end of its useful life.

Project description

The Eastside Interceptor (ESI), which consists of 14 pipe sections, is a large and critical component of King County’s wastewater conveyance system. The ESI collects and conveys untreated wastewater from homes, businesses, and schools between Kirkland and Renton and sends it to South Treatment Plant to be cleaned and released into Puget Sound.

This project will repair ESI Section 8 (ESI 8), a 1-mile underground pipeline going from the I-90 and I-405 interchange in Bellevue to the intersection of Coal Creek Parkway Southeast and I-405. Completing repairs now will help extend the life of this vital section of the wastewater pipeline for another 50 years, ensuring reliable wastewater services for thousands of homes, businesses, and organizations in the region.

Design phase update

The project team is working toward the 60% design milestone. During this phase, the team will:

  • Continue to design the pipe rehabilitation project.
  • Continue coordinating with project partners and working on permit applications.
  • Starting as early as June, fieldwork activities will resume at several locations throughout the project area. Testing and inspections of existing infrastructure will take place on King County property and public right-of-way with the necessary permits.
  • Inform community members about the project and upcoming survey work.

Construction is expected to start in 2026. This spring and summer, project team members will be attending local fairs, festivals, and community events to share updates about the project. Stay tuned for more announcements on how you can connect with the ESI 8 team!
