Coal Creek sewer upgrade

The Coal Creek Sewer Upgrade Project will install new sewer pipes to carry more wastewater and meet the growing needs of Bellevue and Newcastle.

Project description

The Coal Creek Sewer Upgrade Project will upgrade a regional sewer line that serves Bellevue and Newcastle. Built between 1966 and 1991, the existing pipeline is nearing its maximum capacity and needs to be upgraded to carry more wastewater and meet the growing needs of the community.

Once installed, the new sewer pipe will serve the area for another 50 years or more.

Project update

February 23, 2026

Updated work hours for early morning Coal Creek Parkway SE closure on Feb. 24

King County’s contractor is continuing construction activities in Bellevue.

The work hours for the early morning full closures of Coal Creek Parkway SE are now 4:30 am to 6:30 am, this is a change from our previous update. See below for more information.

On the early morning of Tuesday, February 24, the contractor will stop traffic in both directions on Coal Creek Parkway SE for short durations. The closures will be just north of the Forest Drive SE and Coal Creek Parkway SE intersection and will occur intermittently between 4:30 am and 6:30 am.

These closures are required so the contractor can safely move oversized equipment in and out of the work area. Drivers should expect significant delays on Coal Creek Parkway SE during these hours. We encourage drivers to use alternate routes during the closure.

View work area and lane closure map, and what to expect.

Reminder: do not enter construction zones

The Red Cedar trailhead and other work areas are active construction zones and remain closed to all public use. Other trailheads in the area such as the Cinder Mine, Red Town, Coal Creek Family YMCA, and Forest Drive trailheads are available for trail users. Stay out of fenced areas and the creek bank for your safety and to protect the Coal Creek Natural Area and salmon habitat.
