Antifreeze

Most automotive antifreeze is made with ethylene glycol, which can be re-refined into pure glycol and used to make new antifreeze. The fractional distillation process produces the purest result and allows antifreeze to be recycled many times.

Extended-life antifreeze reduces the number of fluid changes, cutting costs and waste. It’s important to recycle antifreeze properly and clean up spills right away, since ethylene glycol is toxic to plants, animals, and people.

Antifreeze should never be poured down a drain, sewer, or storm pipe.

Quick Tips

Choose

  • Recycled-content antifreeze produced via fractional distillation re-refinement
  • Extended-life antifreeze formulas
  • Clean up spills immediately using absorbent pads, granules, or containment methods

Avoid

  • Spilling product
  • Phosphate-based or metal salts supplemental cooling additives (SCA)
  • On-site recycling processes that compromise product quality

End of Life

  • Recycle spent antifreeze through the vendor or certified recycler
  • Train employees in proper recycling procedures
  • Never pour antifreeze down drains or into the environment
  • Keep spent antifreeze separate from other wastes
  • Do not mix different colors or types of antifreeze

An EPA checkmark indicates a certification or standard is recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
