Public Health – Seattle & King County does not provide abortions. At our Birth Control and Sexual Health Clinics, we offer pregnancy tests, and our staff offer support in discussing all options.
Paying for an abortion
You can pay for an abortion using any type of health insurance – including state insurance (such as Apple Health) and private insurance — or by paying with cash or a credit card.
- State health insurance. The state health insurance in Washington State is called Apple Health, through Healthplanfinder, and it will pay for an abortion. You can get Apple Health insurance based on how much you make per month. And if you earn too much for Apple Health, there are other low-cost options through Washington Healthplanfinder. You need to live in Washington State for Apple Health, but you do not need to be a U.S. citizen. If you qualify for Apple Health insurance, it will pay for the abortion and follow-up visits. You won't have to pay anything. Learn more and get help from Public Health Navigators.
- Private health insurance. If you have private insurance through your job (or your parent's or spouse's job), be sure to call your insurance company to find out if they cover an abortion, and if so, how much of the cost they cover. Most insurance does cover. You should also call the abortion clinic to ask if they take your insurance. If you are using insurance through a parent, guardian, or spouse's job, they may learn about the abortion from insurance paperwork. If you want more confidentiality, you can pay the cost yourself, or you may be able to use Apple Health insurance instead. Applying for Apple Health is completely confidential. For questions or assistance, contact a Public Health insurance navigator.
- Cash or credit card. If you don't have any insurance, if you don't want to use your insurance, or if your insurance doesn't cover abortion, you can choose to pay for your abortion with cash or a credit card. Sometimes private insurance only pays for part of the cost, and you will have to pay for the rest of the cost.
It is easy to apply for Apple Health.
- You can apply online at www.wahealthplanfinder.org. You will usually find out if you qualify within 30 minutes.
- You can apply and ask questions from Public Health's Access & Outreach team. You can also call Access & Outreach hotline at 1-800-756-5437. You may be able to apply over the phone and be approved immediately.
The cost of a medical or surgical abortion usually starts at $600. For pregnancies that are over 12 weeks, the cost is higher and goes up each week. If you don’t have Apple Health or private insurance, you can pay with cash or credit card.
The Northwest Abortion Access Fund is a non-profit organization that helps people pay for abortions. You can call 1-866-692-2310 or visit nwaafund.org for more information. If you are having a hard time getting the money you need, you can also let the clinic know. Many people have to deal with this situation, and the clinic may be able to offer helpful advice. For more information about paying for an abortion, visit the Washington Department of Health.
