This means that we are committed to taking feedback from the community, and you can expect to see us working with community groups in the project area to ensure that the project reflects neighborhood values.

How we work with the community

The Mouth of Duwamish Wet Weather Facilities team will engage with the community through a variety of methods including, but not limited to:

  • Mailed and virtual project updates
  • Interviews with community leaders
  • Outreach to area businesses
  • Attendance at community meetings and events
  • Online and in-person open houses
  • Public surveys

Trick or Tree

October 26, 2024

Noon – 4 p.m. | Highland Park Corner Store

Purpose

King County and Dirt Corps hosted the third annual Trick or Tree event in Highland Park, featuring a pet costume contest, information booths, and free native trees for the community. Our team attended with the Rainwise and West Duwamish Wet Weather Storage project teams to share information about King County’s ongoing efforts in neighborhood greening and environmental protection. We engaged with 121 community members and distributed over 150 trees. Thank you to those who joined and shared their enthusiasm about clean water initiatives!

Fall 2024 Job Fair

October 23, 2024

4 – 7 p.m. | South Seattle College Georgetown Campus

Purpose

King County partnered with the South Seattle College - Georgetown Campus Sustainable Building and Science Technology program to host a Job Fair in October. This event highlighted career opportunities in construction, clean water, and sustainable building. The event attracted over 200 attendees of all ages and backgrounds, eager to explore family-wage jobs and training pathways. Nearly 20 training, apprentice, and education programs participated, alongside 15 employers recruiting for upcoming roles. We’re excited to support living wage jobs through this project and look forward to seeing these connections grow. 

Duwamish River Festival

August 3, 2024

Noon – 5 p.m. | Duwamish River People’s Park and Shoreline Habitat

Purpose

King County was once again a proud sponsor of the Duwamish River Festival on August 3. Our team spoke with community members in the area, raised awareness of the work, and promoted our online open house and survey from noon to 5 p.m. We connected with 194 attendees! Thank you to those who stopped by our booth and signed up for email updates. We look forward to continuing the conversation as this work progresses.

Georgetown Carnival

June 8, 2024
Noon – 6 p.m. | Historic downtown Georgetown

Purpose

The Georgetown Carnival, organized by the Georgetown Business Association, gathers families in the Georgetown neighborhood for a day of carnival games, live performances, music, arts and crafts, and vendors. The Mouth of the Duwamish Wet Weather Facilities team hosted an information booth at the Georgetown Carnival on Saturday, June 8, from noon – 6 p.m. to raise awareness of the work and to promote a recently launched Online Open House and survey.

SODO Flea Market

June 8, 2024
10 a.m. – 4 p.m. | Utah Ave S

Purpose

The SODO Flea Market, hosted monthly, offers the community a vibrant gathering of over 60 vendors in the SODO area. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of antiques, vintage clothing, and handmade goods, all while savoring treats from food and coffee trucks. The market is family and pet-friendly, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all. The Mouth of the Duwamish Wet Weather Facilities outreach team attended the SODO Flea Market on Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. to raise awareness of the work and to promote the recently launched Online Open House and survey.

SODO BIA Q2 Networking Event

June 5, 2024
4 p.m. – 6 p.m. | Pacific Fabrics

Purpose

The SODO BIA hosts quarterly networking events for community members who own property, manage a business, or work in the SODO neighborhood. The event offers a unique opportunity to meet people who work in the neighborhood where they are without disrupting business operations. The Mouth of the Duwamish Wet Weather Facilities outreach team attended the SODO BIA Q2 Networking Event on Wednesday, June 5, from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. to raise awareness of the work and to promote the recently launched Online Open House and survey.

Summer 2024 Online Open House

Between June 1 and August 31, 2024, King County hosted an online open house and survey to share information about the Mouth of Duwamish Wet Weather Facilities and gather community insights. While the survey is now closed, the online open house is still available with information about our efforts.

Virtual Public Meetings

June 18, 2024, from noon to 1 p.m. and June 27, 2024, from 9 to 10 a.m.

Purpose

King County held two virtual public meetings on June 18, 2024, from noon to 1 p.m. and June 27, 2024, from 9 to 10 a.m. to provide online opportunities for community members to engage with the Mouth of Duwamish Wet Weather Facilities team. During the presentation, King County shared an update on planning progress and invited input from participants using polls, a Q&A session, and a post-meeting survey.
