Applying to the School-to-Work Program

How to apply

• Before applying

  Getting employment services can be complicated. The best way to start School-to-Work is to use a checklist and learn what needs to be completed by when including:

  1. All School-to-Work students must enroll in Development Disabilities Administration (DDA) through the Department of Social Health Services (DSHS).
  2. Valid identification is needed to work. Commonly used forms of identification include:
     • Washington State ID through the Department of Licensing
     • Social Security card 
     • US passport or US passport card
     • Permanent Resident Card
  3. All students must get a long-term funded employment support and have 3 options:
     1. Paid for privately
     2. Many people with long-term supports are funded by DDA. You can make an appointment with the Social Security Administration to apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) at age 18 and prepare for DDA.
     3. If SSI is not an option, you can apply for Healthcare for Workers with Disabilities when you start a job.
  4. Apply for services with DSHS, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR). Ask your transition teacher for support with connecting to your program’s DVR liaison. Anyone with a disability looking for employment should apply to DVR as early as age 14.
  5. Apply to Metro/ACCESS and consider obtaining a reduced fair regional pass.
  6. Learn more about the Employment Service Agencies available to you or your student.

  It is best to apply when entering the transition from high school to your next step. Students exiting their transition program in June 2024 should be submitting their applications now! Apply with a School-to-Work application when you first start your high school transition program. We accept applications as early as possible and will work with you and your teacher toward your next step. We encourage you to apply to School-to-Work when you first start your high school transition program.
