It’s that time of year! The King County Council has once again approved the allocation of Metro surplus vans to eligible non-profit organizations and local governments.
In District 7, the following local organizations in Auburn will benefit from King County’s annual surplus van program: Auburn School District and Mission Africa.
This program not only helps address mobility needs of low-income individuals, seniors, youth and/or people with disabilities, but also supports the transportation of goods or supplies to serve their needs for the duration of the public emergency in response to the pandemic.
“In the 1990s, when I was chair of the King County Council Budget Committee, one of our staff members took me to Bellevue and showed me where surplus vans were gathering dust. As a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Way Boys and Girls Club, I knew there was a need for vans, and I proposed to find a way to repurpose these vans throughout the county, which is the reason why we are still doing this great work today,” said King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer. “When I look back on my own legacy of serving on this council, this is one of those ‘successes’ that brings me joy. This program has served so many people in our region and I am very happy about starting it.”
