Story

The King County Council this week unanimously confirmed the reappointments of Auburn resident and army veteran, Carrol Stripling, and Vietnam veteran and former Auburn mayor, Pete Lewis, to the King County Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy (VSHSL) Advisory Board’s veterans committee for three-year terms expiring on May 31, 2025.

“Carrol has been an outstanding member of the veterans committee and I am proud to have been able to sponsor her reappointment,” said Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer, who represents the Auburn area on the King County Council. “With her military background and years of community leadership, she has provided a much-needed perspective when it comes to allocating levy funds.”

“Pete’s record of service and commitment to veterans speaks for itself,” continued Councilmember von Reichbauer, who also sponsored his reappointment. “When called to serve, whether in the armed forces or in the community, Pete has always stepped up, and I appreciate his willingness to serve another term on this board.”

Carrol is a retired Army Sergeant Major who served in the Judges Advocate Corps (JAG).  She has also been a member of the King County Veterans Program Advisory Board, the King County Veterans and Human Services Levy, the Washington Women Veterans Advisory Committee, the American Legion, Women Army Corps Veterans Association, Washington State Armed Forces E9 Association and Judge Advocate General Association Non-Commissioned Officer Corps.  She enlisted in the Army in March 1974, was promoted to Sergeant Major in November 1989, and retired in November 2011.

Throughout his career, Pete has worked with veterans at the city, county, state and federal level.  He has been involved in veterans’ issues, including serving on the American-Vietnam War Memorial Board and as a Vietnam Commemorative Partner. He was also instrumental in developing the King County Veterans and Human Services Levy, providing input at almost every step in the process.

The VSHSL Advisory Board oversees the distribution of VSHSL proceeds and advises King County on matters that uniquely affect each of the VSHSL’s priority populations. The board consists of 30 members organized in three 10-member committees. Each committee represents a VSHSL priority population.
