King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn introduced a budget amendment to restore funding to the King County Sheriff’s Office in the King County 2021-2022 Biennial Budget. He released the following statement following the amendment’s failure in today’s Budget and Fiscal Management Committee meeting:

“It’s not right that Seattle politicians are making draconian cuts to law enforcement services that primarily serve rural and suburban King County — cuts that don’t impact service in their own districts. For over a decade, King County residents have seen an aggressive decline in police presence, and even prior to any additional budget cuts to the Sheriff’s Office, have far fewer officers per person than other jurisdictions in our region. To further slash our Sheriff’s Office budget betrays one of the most fundamental duties of government: to provide for the public safety of our communities.”
