The Metropolitan King County Council welcomed Consul General Nasimi Aghayev from the Republic of Azerbaijan at the beginning of the council’s April 17 meeting.  Consul General Aghayev currently serves as Dean of the Los Angeles Consular Corps, representing 105 nations, and is fluent in seven languages.

This was just the second time to the Seattle area for the Consul General, and the Council engaged him in dialogue about the growing cultural and economic bonds between Azerbaijan and the state of Washington. Azerbaijan Airlines is a key partner with Boeing in our state, and Azerbaijan has entered into key partnerships with Microsoft to incorporate a new generation of information technologies into their growing business economy.

The Consul General discussed the history and climate of his country, highlighting that Azerbaijan had enacted women’s suffrage two years prior to the United States, and was also the first secular majority-Muslim country. It was also a key partner with the United States following 9/11.

“I was honored to welcome Consul General Aghayev to King County,” said Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer.  “This was the first step in building a meaningful relationship between us moving forward.”
