Story
Long-time community leader Mike Park, who has served the city of Federal Way in a number of areas, including as Mayor, today received the Martin Luther King Jr. Medal of Distinguished Service from Metropolitan King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer. Park was honored for his decades of service and dedication, both to the city of Federal Way as well as the growing Korean-American community of South King County.
“Mike Park has responded to Dr. King’s question: ‘What are you doing for others?’” said von Reichbauer. “In his 30 years of dedication to the city of Federal Way, both as a city councilmember and mayor, and to the Korean-American community of South King County, Mike has devoted himself to bringing people together for the greater good of his community.”
Park has been involved with Federal Way since its incorporation as a city in 1990. He served 16 years on the Federal Way City Council and served two terms as Federal Way’s first Korean-American Mayor.
Along with being a member of the City Council, Park remained active in the community as a co-founder of the city of Federal Way Korean Quarterly Meeting. The 25-year old organization helps bring local public officials and the Korean-American community of Federal Way together and promotes civic engagement.
Park has served as Chair of the Seattle-Washington State Korean American Association, Vice-Chair of the Federal Way Community Safety Task Force, President of the Seattle Chapter of the National Unification Advisory Council, Chair of the Korean School of Federal Way and as a member of numerous other community organizations and boards.
Mike Park’s work in the Korean-American community has been internationally recognized. In 2011, the Republic of Korea presented Park its President’s Medal.
The annual presentation of the MLK Medal of Distinguished Service is the Council’s way of thanking those who have made a particularly strong impact on the county and to encourage others to renew their dedication to serve their community.
This is the third year Councilmembers have recognized individuals in their districts who have answered the question asked by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “What are you doing for others?”
