Shelter at 35th and Morgan to provide protection and safety for clients of West Seattle Food Bank

King County Metro Bus riders boarding on Southwest Morgan Street travelling west from 35th Avenue Southwest will now have protection from the elements, as King County Metro has installed a shelter at the location. The stop is frequented by clients of the West Seattle Food Bank, which is also located at the intersection.

“The West Seattle Food Bank serves some of our most vulnerable residents,” said King County Councilmember Joe McDermott. “This new shelter will make it both easier and safer for those who use the bus as transportation to and from the Food Bank.”

“There are many individuals that use our services that physically struggle to get here and get back with groceries,” said Fran Yeats, Executive Director of the West Seattle Food Bank. “Having a covered bus stop so these individuals can wait for the bus out of rain will be a very, very big help.”

The West Seattle Food Bank provides 1.5 million pounds of nutritious food, baby food, pet food, diapers, and hygiene supplies to over 9,300 individuals including, 1,800 seniors on a yearly basis.

Metro maintains four stops at the intersection, however only the westbound stop was without shelter prior to the new construction.

“It is important for Metro to prioritize installing shelters at stops that serve senior citizens,” said McDermott.

Also in West Seattle, Metro’s southbound RapidRide shelter at Southwest 35th Street & Southwest Avalon Way is also reopening. The average daily weekday ridership at this stop is about 300 boardings, and 640 deboardings, with riders taking RapidRide C Line and routes 21, 50 and 55. Metro will be working for several weeks to add the technology needed for real-time information signs and the off-board ORCA reader.

This is one of the busier stops in West Seattle. RapidRide buses serve the stop every 6-12 minutes all day, six days per week, and 15 minutes at night and on Sundays. RapidRide C Line carries more than 10,000 daily riders, according to August figures.
