McDermott: ST3 proposal “Investment to support population and transportation growth”
Summary
Puget Sound residents and regional leaders have remained consistent – there is a great need, and substantial support for, investing in our region’s economy and people through light rail and other rapid transit
Story
Today, the Sound Transit Board of Directors released its draft proposal for Sound Transit 3 which would expand the region’s existing light rail and rapid transit system.“Puget Sound residents and regional leaders have remained consistent – there is a great need, and substantial support for, investing in our region’s economy and people through light rail and other rapid transit,” said King County Chair and Sound Transit Boardmember Joe McDermott. “The proposal put forward today by the Sound Transit Board is the next step in making that investment.”
The plan would bring light rail to West Seattle, Ballard and South Lake Union. Additionally, Bus Rapid Transit would serve key transportation corridors I-405, 522 and 167. The proposal also includes a light rail stop at the Boeing Access Road which will serve as a key intersection for light rail, Interstate 5 and, in the future, Sounder rail service.
“Our region has experienced rapid growth. Unfortunately, our transportation infrastructure is trying to catch-up. Our proposal works to improve the entire system -- and helps to accommodate the regional growth that is expected to come,” said McDermott.
The proposal would be funded through increases to property tax, sales tax and the Motor Vehicle Excise Tax along with federal funds, fares and bonding.
“We’ve seen outstanding light rail ridership with the opening of ULink. We now have the opportunity to grow on this success, get more people out of their cars, and ease the gridlock that is affecting so many,” McDermott said.
Sound Transit will begin public outreach on the proposal. Feedback received will shape the final package which may be placed on the ballot for voters’ approval in November.
