Covington Skate Park gets boost from County sports grant

Renovations and upgrades to Gerry Crick Skatepark will come in part from a $30,000 grant the Covington Park District will receive from King County.

“These grants are so important to local communities,” said King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn, who represents Covington on the County Council. “Gerry Crick Skatepark is in need of some upgrades and I am glad we are able to help provide them some additional financing to move the project forward.”

“This is wonderful news,” said Covington Mayor Margaret Harto. “Gerry Crick Skatepark is a vital part of city and serves a large community.”

Built in 2004, Gerry Crick Skatepark was named in honor of a former member of the Covington Parks and Recreation Commission. The funds will be used to make renovations to the ramps and metal frames used by skateboarders along with changes to the existing modular components at the park. They are in need of replacement because the weather causes the wood in the components to swell and warp.

The grants are awarded through the Youth Sport Facilities Grant (YSFG) Program, which provides matching grant funds to rehabilitate or develop sports fields and facilities serving youth in King County. Grant funds can be used for a variety of projects, including construction or rehabilitation of ball fields, playgrounds and sport courts, among others.

The grants must be matched by local community organizations, and are administered by the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks.
