County Council recognizes emergency room excellence of Swedish/Ballard Hospital

Summary

One of 17 emergency departments honored for performance and innovative practice

Story

The Metropolitan King County Council today recognized the staff of the Emergency Room at Swedish/Ballard Hospital. Their work with the patients that come into their center has received national notice—the Emergency Room was awarded the prestigious Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association, a premier international professional nursing association.

“I can say from personal experience, Swedish/Ballard’s emergency room nurses and staff pursue excellence and provide amazing care 24/7, 365 days a year because they care about their patients and community,” said Council Chair Larry Phillips, whose district includes Swedish/Ballard. “I salute them for their extraordinary work, and this well-deserved recognition.”

“Our campus and the community surrounding Swedish/Ballard are truly thrilled that our ED has been honored with the 2014 Lantern Award,” said Jennifer Graves, chief executive and nurse executive at Swedish/Ballard. “Our visionary manager and nursing staff have consistently sought to raise the bar and achieve the highest levels of professional practice, and through a relentless focus on continuous improvement, they have demonstrated exceptional care, quality and safety. As a nurse, I feel blessed to work beside this group of colleagues, and am particularly grateful to our ED Shared Leadership team, which dedicated a significant amount of time and energy to telling our story of success through the Lantern application process.”

The Lantern Award honors emergency departments that exemplify exceptional practice and innovative performance in the core areas of leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research. Seventeen Emergency Rooms throughout the U.S. received Lantern Awards, Swedish/Ballard and Swedish/Edmonds were the only two Emergency Rooms in the Pacific Northwest recognized by the Emergency Nurses Association.
