County Council recognizes Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks took time out today from their preparations for the upcoming football season and defending their Super Bowl Championship to meet with members of the Metropolitan King County Center—who made a special visit to the Virginia Mason Athletic Complex in Renton for a tour and a special presentation.

After the tour of the facility and meeting with some of the team, the Council presented to General Manager John Schneider and Coach Pete Carroll a recognition proclaiming the month of June “Seattle Seahawks Month” in King County.

“The memories of the Seahawks win in Super Bowl XLVIII are as vivid today as they were in February,” said Council Chair Larry Phillips. “And even before they became Super Bowl Champs, the Hawks held a special place in King County. Today is a celebration of the unique relationship the team has with the County and the greatest fans in the NFL.”

Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer had a key role in the negotiations that led to Paul Allen’s purchase of the franchise in 1997.

Whether on the field or off the field, the Seahawks have made our region proud,” said von Reichbauer. “The commitment to excellence began with Paul Allen’s personal commitment to the public in 1997, and continues today in the dedication John Schneider and Pete Carroll bring to work 365 days of the year.”

The County Council previously adopted legislation that allowed for the demolition of the Kingdome and the construction of Century Link Field—the loudest stadium in the world—through the creation of a Public Stadium Authority to construct and own the new facility. Since moving into Century Link, the Seahawks have won six division titles, two National Football Conference Championships and on February 2, 2014 defeated the Denver Broncos 43-8 to win Super Bowl XLVIII.

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, the Seattle Seahawks football team has provided the people of King County a sense of community pride from their preparation for and dedication to victory in Super Bowl XLVIII; and

WHEREAS, the Seahawks success has resulted from the tireless efforts and commitment to excellence of General Manager John Schneider, Head Coach Pete Carroll, the exceptional staff and the talented players, who have demonstrated teamwork, skill, and perseverance; and

WHEREAS, the Seahawks contribution to our local economy and culture has been due to their commitment and hometown spirit led by owner Paul G. Allen, who stepped up to purchase the team in 1997 when its future was uncertain, with the help from community members and King County Councilmembers; and

WHEREAS, the existence of the Seahawks home field, Century Link Field, is due to the support from the people of Washington State, who approved a ballot measure in June 1997 funding construction of the stadium; and

WHEREAS, the King County Council played a vital role in keeping the Seahawks in Seattle by forming a Public Stadium Authority to construct and own the new stadium; and

WHEREAS, the Seahawks players and coaches through their efforts off the field to support many charitable causes including funding for King County’s Youth Sports Facilities Grant Program supporting the renovation of local athletic fields; and

WHEREAS, the Seahawks fans, the 12s, have made Century Link Field one of the most formidable home sports venues, setting the Guinness World Record for noise at an outdoor sports stadium twice in one season; and

WHEREAS, it is the fervent desire of the Metropolitan King County Council and the people of King County that the Seattle Seahawks continue building their dynasty in the National Football League for decades to come;

NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Metropolitan King County Council, proclaim June 2014 to be

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS MONTH

in King County and encourage the 12s both here in King County and around the world to celebrate with the players and staff who made it possible.
