Metropolitan King County Councilmember Larry Phillips released this statement on today’s ruling by the United States Supreme Court on the Defense of Marriage Act:

“I applaud the United State Supreme Court decision that paves the way for greater equality for gay couples. Congratulations to all those who have worked so hard and so long to advance fairness and justice for gay and lesbian individuals and their families.

“I am pleased that the United States government will recognize the legal marriages of gay couples married in King County, Washington, and other marriage equality states, and grant those families the same privileges and benefits heterosexual couples enjoy.”
