County Council recognizes Patrick Dempsey and Team Seattle Racing for generous support of Children’s Hospital

The Metropolitan King County Council today recognized the charitable work of Team Seattle Racing and its partner in raising $400,000 for Seattle Children’s Hospital, “Grey's Anatomy” star Patrick Dempsey.

“Some people use their celebrity to be someone,” said Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer, sponsor of the recognition presented to Dempsey and Team Seattle. “Patrick Dempsey is using his celebrity to do something—and in this case it is to benefit our region and Children’s Hospital.”

When he is not on set, Dempsey’s behind the wheel. He is the owner of Dempsey Racing, which is racing in the IndyCar series. Dempsey, together with Team Seattle, raised $400,000 in funds for the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Seattle Children’s Hospital during the 2010 Rolex 24 at Daytona sports car race.

Since “Grey’s” is set in Seattle, Dempsey quipped that he felt “like I’m at home.” Dempsey spent this morning visiting Children’s and acknowledged that “it hits home when you go to the hospital and you see the great work that is done there.”

Seattle Children’s Hospital is a leader in advanced treatment for infants with heart problems and is pioneering non-invasive heart surgery that reduces trauma and speeds recovery. Team Seattle’s goal is to provide funds for increasing the hospital’s ability to meet the critical needs of these young patients.

Team Seattle and Patrick Dempsey Racing use corporate and private sponsorship to underwrite the cost of the race cars so that one hundred percent of the $400,000 raised go to help children in the pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Children’s.

Team Seattle’s fundraising efforts to date have exceeded $3,500,000 for the Seattle Children’s Hospital.
