South King County’s Annual Flag Day Celebration

Summary

Story

This year’s South King County Flag Day celebration, presented by the Soroptimists of Federal Way and King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer, was held Saturday morning, June 12, at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way. The celebration was an uplifting opportunity to honor current and fallen military personnel, and the flag itself.

“This event is not only an opportunity to salute our Star-Spangled Banner, but also a chance to recognize those who have served under our flag to protect our country,” said councilman Pete von Reichbauer “On June 12th, it is our honor to recognize our local heroes for their service; they deserve our utmost respect and support.”

Lieutenant Colonel Rick Jimenez was the keynote speaker. LTC Jimenez’ current military assignment is as Commander of the 420th Chemical Battalion Commander and FEMA Region 10 CERFP, a mass casualty chemical response unit. He has been awarded the Bronze Star and 13 medals.

The event also gave special recognition to select South King County high school staff, students and graduates who have served or are serving in the United States Armed Forces.

The festivities of one of the most recognized community events of the year took place as Councilman von Reichbauer served as the Master of Ceremonies, and fellow community members, and active and retired service-men and women gathered together in honor of the Flag Day event, which also featured musical salutes from the Thomas Jefferson High School Band, an invocation from Dean Curry-- Senior Pastor of Life Center, and a special presentation of awards to local students for American Flag inspired essays directed by Federal Way City Councilmember Linda Kochmar.
