Story
WHEREAS, Earth Day was established on April 22, 1970, by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson to increase awareness about our planet’s fragile ecosystems and educate people on responsible environmental stewardship; and
WHEREAS, Thursday, April 22, 2010, will mark the 40th anniversary of Earth Day; and
WHEREAS, today, more than 500 million people throughout 175 countries participate in the most widely celebrated secular event in the world; and
WHEREAS, throughout the month of April, King County and numerous organizations and community groups will be celebrating and honoring Earth Day with activities, festivals, and volunteer opportunities to educate people on what they can do as individuals to be responsible stewards of the planet; and
WHEREAS, on April 22, 2010, King County will host the seventh annual Earth Day Expo at Westlake Center, where attendees can get expert advice and information, as well as special discounts and incentives, on making “green” choices and living a “green” lifestyle;
NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Metropolitan King County Council, hereby proclaim April 22, 2010, as
EARTH DAY
in King County and encourage all county residents to learn and apply what they can do to be responsible stewards of our environment and our planet.
