Ferguson recognizes UW math whiz William Johnson

Council congratulates Kenmore resident, winner of Putnam math competition

Story

The Metropolitan King County Council today recognized University of Washington student William Johnson, a recent winner of the annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition.

“My colleagues and I are thrilled to recognize Will’s academic achievements,” said Council Chair Bob Ferguson, sponsor of the recognition. “We are fortunate that Will is focusing his studies here in King County, and I look forward to hearing more exciting news from him in the future.”

Johnson, a graduate of Inglemoor High School in Kenmore, placed in the top five out of a field of four thousand competitors in the in the Putnam Mathematics Competition, one of the most prestigious North American math contests for college students. Johnson is now a Putnam Fellow, a recognition that will stay with him for the duration of his career.

University of Washington president Mark Emmert noted that the Putnam competition is typically won by students from Harvard, MIT and Cal Tech. Johnson is the first University of Washington student to be named a Putnam Fellow since the competition began over 72 years ago.

“I am excited about this award, and looking forward to continuing my studies at the University of Washington,” said Johnson. “I have been challenged by the various math professors and preparation courses here, and would like to thank my family, friends, and mentors for their role in my success.”

Johnson, who is majoring in mathematics and computer sciences at the UW, is happy with his decision to remain home to get his degree. “I liked the campus, and I like the state of Washington, where I grew up.”
