Dunn slams controversial motion pushing decriminalization of psychedelic drugs

March 24, 2026

King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn issued the following statement Tuesday in response to the passage of a motion “stating the council's support for ... full decriminalization of entheogen-related activities” referring to psylocibin mushrooms, ayahuasca tea, mescaline, and more. Dunn was one of two votes against the motion:

“The State of Oregon experimented with full drug decriminalization in 2021. It failed so spectacularly and was so unpopular the state had to reverse course and re-criminalize in 2024. While the intent of encouraging medical research is commendable, treating King County as a free-for-all for experimental drugs does not accomplish that intent.”
