About Environmental Health Services
King County’s Environmental Health Services Division focuses on identifying and sustaining environmental conditions that promote health equity and healthy people and communities. Our vision is healthy, safe, and vibrant King County communities that are free of health disparities based on race, gender or economic status.
We recognize that Racism is a Public Health Crisis, and ground our work in these values:
- Racial equity
- Supportive and creative work culture
- Community centered
- Transparency and accountability
We're organized into four sections |
---|
Food and Facilities Section Our Food and Facilities Section permits and inspects food establishments (such as restaurants, food cards, grocery stores and farmers markets) and water recreation facilities (like pools and spas), monitors water quality at King County beaches, responds to foodborne illness outbreaks, and issues food workers cards. |
Community Environmental Health Section Our Community Environmental Health Section permits and inspects plumbing and gas piping, permits on-site sewage/septic systems, and responds to failing septic systems. |
Community Toxics Science and Policy Section Our Community Toxics Science and Policy Section permits and inspects solid and biomedical waste facilities and pet businesses. This section also works on the county's response to climate change, lead poisoning prevention, rodent and zoonotic disease prevention, reducing exposure to hazardous waste, providing support to homeless service providers, and land use planning. |
Operations Section Our Operations Section handles thousands of annual permit requests, provides administrative support across the division, and supports workforce development, code compliance, and continuous improvement. |
