Federal Way High School Basketball Seniors Pizza Party
As I live within walking distance of Federal Way High School, I hosted a pizza party for the basketball team’s seniors to celebrate their achievements, both on the court and in school. While many of us remember Yattah Reed as a player at FWHS, he is now known as Coach Reed. Congratulations Yattah for your success as a teacher, coach, and parent.

PAC-12 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships
The Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way is one of the fastest pools in the world! Numerous PAC-12 records were broken at the Swimming and Diving finals, and over 200 world records have been set at the King County facility. No wonder swimmers come from all over the WORLD to use our great facility! The students you see today are the Olympians of tomorrow.

Anniversary of the War in Ukraine
February 24th marked the one-year anniversary of the unnecessary Russian invasion of Ukraine. I recently met some of those most devastated by the war, the Ukrainian children who were forced to flee their homes, some without their families, just to survive. Thanks to the hard work of non-profits, and individuals like Honorary Consul General Valeriy Goloborodko, these children are in the United States to receive physical and mental health services, including rehabilitation, prosthetics, education, and much more, so that they can begin healing from their experience.
A Token of Appreciation from the Federal Way Korean American Association
While South Korea and our region are divided by over 5,000 miles, there are so many values which unite us. I was honored by Federal Way Korean American Association President Daniel Kim and former Federal Way Mayor Mike Park for my work to build people-to-people bridges, with this magnificent replica from Chuam Beach in Donghae.

Sports not only bring people together, but they provide countless jobs in our region, and I was honored to join my colleague, King County Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles (JKW), at the 88th Seattle Sports Commission banquet. JKW has been a leader in making outdoor sports accessible to all people, particularly those with disabilities. Ken Griffey Jr. was just one of the many Hall of Famers present. Korean School of Federal Way Fundraiser Night
When you think of the Korean School, you may think of brick and mortar, but I think of a bridge. Although different in our creation, the Republic of Korea and the USA have shared VALUES which we need now more than ever in the Pacific Rim today, and the Korean School reminds us of the importance of working together. Thank you Principal Hye Su Han, Mayor Emeritus Mike Park, and Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell.

“Good Eggs” Breakfast with King County Flood Control District Director Michelle Clark
Since 1990, King County Floodplains have been declared a federal flood disaster area thirteen times. Michelle Clark, Executive Director of the King County Flood Control District, joined our “Good Eggs” breakfast meeting to talk about the services the Flood District provides to ALL of King County. For example, as the Green River Valley is the breadbasket of our region, Seattle would run out of food in days if it flooded. Thank you, Michelle, for your PREVENTATIVE work in our region.

King County Council Goes to Washington, D.C.
In April, I had the rare opportunity to tour the Pentagon and see the tribute to Gold Star Families. Individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms leave behind Gold Star Families. I hope we keep these fallen heroes in our thoughts and remember all the Gold Star Families who carry on their legacy.
I saw this tribute while on a trip with the King County Council to share our region’s needs with top federal public officials in Washington, D.C. Our delegation met with U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, as well as U.S. Representatives Adam Smith, Kim Schrier, and Suzan DelBene.

Seattle Mariners Game
I often have said that sports bring people together, and baseball is a cultural bridge between the Republic of Korea and the United States. Recently, I had the opportunity to join Seattle Mariners’ President of Business Operations, Catie Griggs, and Republic of Korea Consul General in Seattle, Seo Eun-ji, at a Mariners ballgame at T-Mobile Park. Catie is the only active female president in an MLB front office and the first in Mariners’ history, while Consul General Seo is the first ever female Korean Consul General in Seattle. What an honor to be joined by two powerhouses in sports and public service, who are leading their organizations forward.

King County Hosts a Groundbreaking Ceremony for South County Recycling and Transfer Station
On May 18th, King County hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for a state-of-the-art station in South King County that will make it safer and easier to recycle, compost, and dispose hazardous materials, contributing to the Re+ initiative to cut greenhouse gas emissions by reinventing the region's waste system.
The new station in Algona will make it more convenient to recycle appliances, glass, metals, plastics, wood, and paper, compost yard waste, and dispose hazardous materials. It will support many green jobs in our region and bolster local apprenticeship programs, both of which are essential to our region’s long-term success. Whiskers and Paws Gala 2023
Mahatma Gandhi once said: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” This was the focus at the Auburn Valley Humane Society’s Whiskers and Paws Gala held at Hotel Murano in Tacoma on May 20th. The gala successfully raised over $123,000 that will help the Auburn Valley Humane Society save and change lives…four paws at a time.

Martin Luther King Jr. Medal of Distinguished Service Award
On June 6th, I awarded Catherine Carlile the Martin Luther King Jr. Medal of Distinguished Service, an award that recognizes individuals whose work has answered the question asked by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “What are you doing for others?”
Catherine Carlile has responded to Dr. King’s question, “What are you doing for others?” through her leadership at the Looking Out Foundation, which supports social justice and humanitarian causes across the United States and globally, including raising funds to help disaster-stricken communities recover from devastating natural events.
The foundation’s most recent campaigns include raising over $300,000 in seven days for earthquake victims in Syria and Turkey, as well as raising over $500,000 as part of Nashville’s Love Rising benefit.
Despite their international work and success, Catherine and her family have chosen to make South King County their home. Although Catherine retains her English accent, she has adopted the Northwest value of looking back and giving back.
South King County Scholar Athlete with Mariners President Jerry Dipoto
Seattle Mariners President Jerry Dipoto hit home runs at Auburn’s Emerald Downs with softball and baseball teams from South King County school districts. He spoke about the holistic programs they offer to the Mariners baseball players, which contribute to their success on and off the baseball field. An inspiring speaker, great food and an incredible auction helped raise money for local high school sports.

On June 24th, over 200 vehicles lined up for my first, post-covid shredding event at the Federal Way Performing Arts and Event Center parking lot. Whether it was old financial papers, personal notes or unnecessary family files, people lined up early to dispose of them at the PAEC to help fight identity theft.
“Good Eggs” Breakfast with U.S. Rep. Kim Schrier
At my June Good Eggs Breakfast, we were joined by Congresswoman (and Doctor) Kim Schrier, whose congressional district includes portions of King, Pierce, Snohomish, Chelan, Douglas, and Kittitas counties. Despite the rhetoric we see on the news, she spoke to the importance and prevalence of bipartisanship, and how those efforts have advanced legislation that work to end hunger in America by supporting food banks and food programs in schools. She also mentioned how she is working to create stronger ties with her community, especially with local government, to improve outcomes for her constituents.

Lower Russell Levee Setback Project and Van Doren’s Landing Park Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Parks, like the updated Van Doren’s Landing in Kent, give families and individuals a space to gather and relax. I was pleased to see the King County Flood Control District’s partnership with the City of Kent and the Muckleshoot Tribe to ensure the Lower Russell Levee Setback Project succeed as an important community asset, rain, or shine, for people and habitat. Recognizing the Horse Racing Industry
When I presented Michael Alhadeff with the trophy his brother Kenny’s horse won in the 88th running of the Longacres Mile, I was reminded that horse racing in Washington is all about families.
As the Honorary Steward for this race, I noted horse racing generates hundreds of jobs and millions of tax dollars, and is an integral part of Native American culture. It was an honor to see so many familiar faces from both tracks. We are all indebted to Joe Gottstein, Ron Crockett and now the Muckleshoot Tribe for supporting the great industry of horse racing in Washington.

MLB All-Star Game in Seattle
While many of the 47,159 in attendance will remember the NL defeating the AL 3-2, or Julio Rodriguez's 41 home runs in the home-run derby at MLB's All-Star Game, I will remember reminiscing with Lou Piniella about the Mariners' 116 wins in 2001 and the number of times his passion got him ejected from a game. Great to see you, “Sweet Lou”.
Shop Local at Carpinito Bros. Farm Stand
Shop local! Brothers Mike & Dan Carpinito began farming vegetables on their family’s farm in Kent over 50 years ago, and I recently stopped for some produce. Their selection brought Federal Way Councilmember Hoang Tran in as well. Carpinito Bros. Farms is one of the last remaining farmlands in the Green River Valley, and Mike & Dan, along with their children, have expanded their crop selection to include over 40 varieties of farm fresh vegetables, hand-harvested from over 800 acres.

King County Council Recognizes Iam Tongi
While many recognize Iam Tongi as the 2023 American Idol, I see a young 18-year-old fulfilling his late father’s and supportive mother’s dream for their son. Pacific Islanders are all about family, and many showed up for the recognition of my constituent and recent grad of Decatur High School, Iam Tongi. Mahalo!

“Good Eggs” Breakfast with King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion
King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion joined us for July’s “Good Eggs” breakfast meeting. As Prosecutor, Leesa oversees an office of 600 employees and is responsible for enforcing the laws pertaining to violent crimes, sexual assaults, and property crimes.
The past few years have brought soaring crime rates and many of us have unfortunately experienced this lawlessness first-hand. During our meeting, Leesa addressed what we have been seeing and spoke to the importance of collaborating with local law enforcement, increasing police and prosecutor resources, and reducing the backlog of pending cases.

Dick’s Drive-In Opens Federal Way Branch
Dick Spady’s almost 70-year legacy of being a good neighbor and a good employer is alive and well with his granddaughter, Jasmine Donovan, and their staff at the opening of the 9th Dick’s Burgers in the Puget Sound Area. Dick’s Deluxe, fries, and milkshakes anyone?
I was honored by Jasmine Donovan, Dick’s granddaughter, who asked me to share words about her grandfather, Dick Spady.
(Left) Jim Spady helped his father grow from a business partnership to a family-owned business. (Right) Dick Spady worked with me and Councilmember Larry Gossett to establish community forums to benefit public discourse.
South King County Fundraisers
In less than a week, we had three great South King County fundraisers to help our neighbors. First, was the Kiwanis Salmon Bake, where King County Councilmember Claudia Balducci joined us; then the Rotary Croquet tournament where Federal Way School District Superintendent Dr. Dani Pfeiffer dominated. I was also the honorary chair for FUSION where over 600 came together at Dumas Bay in Pacific Islander gear to support transitional housing. We can’t help everyone, but EVERYONE can help someone!

Felix Hernandez Joins Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame
While Felix Hernandez was inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame, he could also be a member of the Hall of Loyalty for his 418 starts in 15 seasons, beginning on August 4th, 2005. While the 2010 Cy Young Award and the August 15th, 2012, perfect game against Tampa Bay were highlights, every game King Felix pitched in was memorable for the King’s Court. All Rise!! Go M’s!
Christopher Cho’s Clinical Work in Rural America
While our work is based on policies and programs, it is the people we work with who make the difference. It was great catching up with my former intern, Christopher Cho, and his father, Willie, over lunch. Chris edited our Health Resource Guide during COVID, and is now preparing for medical school by assisting people living in rural America with their clinical needs.

Memorial Stadium
Federal Way School District (FWSD) families have much to be proud of with the remodel of Memorial Stadium, and the commitment of Dr. Dani Pfeiffer and her Board to build for the future and not the past. Sports help bring people together, and are needed in our growing, diverse South King County. Auburn and Federal Way each have superintendents who value sports for their benefit to good health and good social involvement. ALL the schools in the FWSD will be playing in an enlarged, 4,000-seat stadium that has increased and improved parking, and incredible turf for football and soccer.

University of Washington’s Raise the Woof 2023
Whether you are a Husky or not, you have to be proud of Michael Penix Jr. His team may be ranked 8th in the country, but he and his teammates are #1 in commitment! Ironically, in the presumed last year of its existence (good luck WSU and OSU), the Pac-12 has more teams in the Top 25 than the SEC.

Recognizing Caroline Whalen
If there were pictures in the dictionary, Caroline Whalen’s image would be next to the words kind and competent. Her work earned her awards from the Harvard Kennedy School and praise from colleagues. Before her retirement in September, Caroline worked tirelessly in service to the public, spearheading the push to establish a King County Customer Service Center at King Street Center, and I was proud to sponsor a recognition commemorating her years of dedication to King County. Caroline will be missed by all!

2023 Retired King County Metro Vanpool Van Allocations
The Auburn Food Bank is one of the recipients of 2023’s allocation of retired King County Metro Vanpool vans in District 7. This program, which I sponsored in the 1990s when I was chair of the Budget Committee, is a partnership between the King County Council and King County Metro. The retired vans are allocated annually to qualified local non-profit and government organizations through an application process. To date, over 760 vans have been awarded to organizations who use them to continue the great work they do in our communities.
The Auburn School District (ASD) Newcomers and International Welcome Center also received a retired King County Metro Vanpool van. As part of their efforts to support multilingual families new to the country, the Welcome Center staff will be transporting families to ASD’s testing center to provide initial screening and determine resources that are needed for the families, as well as connect them with community resources like The Auburn Food Bank or medical needs using these vans.

A Visit to the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Seattle
In November, I had the opportunity to visit the Seattle office of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea and meet with Consul General Eun-ji Seo, as well as her staff. Since being appointed in March 2022, Consul General Seo has worked tirelessly to strengthen the relationship between the Republic of Korea and the Puget Sound region. Because of commercial partnerships and agricultural products, the Republic of Korea is Washington’s fourth largest trading partner, and we talked about economic cooperation and boosting cultural and economic ties between regions. I am pleased Councilmembers Jeanne Kohl-Welles and Sarah Perry were able to join me on this visit.

“Good Eggs” Breakfast with King County Superior Court Judge Sean O’Donnell
“There are more bad mistakes than there are bad people” said Judge Sean O’Donnell, Chief Judge for King County’s Unified Family Court, at our monthly “Good Eggs” breakfast in December. In this meeting, Judge O’Donnell focused on victims, highlighting the fact that our criminal justice system does not place enough emphasis on making sure that justice is served for those who have endured crimes. Thank you, Judge O’Donnell, for shining a light on our judicial branch.

Kiwanian of the Year Award
While the holidays have come to an end, service to others remains more important than ever. Since 1955, the Kiwanis Club of Federal Way has focused on the mission of improving the world, one child at a time, through its sponsorship of youth and community programs throughout the city. As a life-long Kiwanian, one of the highlights of the past year was learning that Kiwanis Club of Federal Way renamed their Kiwanian of the Year award the Pete von Reichbauer Kiwanian of the Year Award. Congratulations to Beverly Triplett and Dick Hayek for being selected the 2023 Kiwanians of the Year!
