Where do my property tax dollars go?
We collect taxes for the state, the county, cities, and taxing districts like schools. Then we distribute the revenue back to them. Taxes also fund voter-approved measures for veterans, seniors, fire protection, and parks. For the most part these voter-approved measures, and not increasing property values, are responsible for increases in property taxes.
King County gets about 20% of your property taxes to fund services like roads, criminal justice, and public health.

2026 PROPERTY TAX HIGHLIGHTS
Overall property taxes for the 2026 tax year are $8.4 billion, an increase of approximately $770 million or 10% from the previous year of $7.7 billion. Total County property value increased by approximately 5.4%, from $873 billion in 2025 to $920 billion in 2026.

City District Stats:
All cities had an increase in median home value with the City of Sammamish increasing the highest at 36.9%
- Only 1 district had a tax decrease, the City of Tukwila.
Lid lifts and Special Levies Passed for the 2026 tax year:
Voters in these Cities approved the following property tax measures.
- Bothell: 10 yr Renewal of Safe Streets and Sidewalks Lid Lift (Sr) Temp ($1.65/$1,000)
- Mercer Island: GO Bond: Construct new Facility ($103,160,000 - 25 years)
- Seattle: 10 yr SR Lid I-122 Election Vouchers ($0.01500/$1,000)
- Seattle: 6yr Renewal lift for Families, Education, Pre-School, etc. ($0.72/$1,000)
Voters in these Fire Districts approved the following property tax measures.
- FD 04 – Shoreline: New Shoreline Regional Fire Authority $0.70/$1,000
- FD 16 – Northshore: New Shoreline Regional Fire Authority $0.70/$1,000
- FD 40 - Spring Glen: Annexation into FD 63
- FD 63 - Renton Regional: Approving Annexation of FD 40 into FD 63
- FD 50 – Skykomish: Lid lift to $1.50 ($1.50/$1,000)
Voters in these School Districts approved the following property tax measures.
- SD 001: Replacement Capital Levy ($300,000,000 - $0.93/$1,000)
- SD 001: Replacement Education and Operations Levy ($250,000,000 - $0.78/$1,000)
- SD 412: 1 yr Supplemental Educational Programs and Operations ($7,250,000 - $0.34/$1,000)
- SD 408: Technology Capital Projects Levy - 6-years ($17,144,318 - $0.77/$1,000)
Voters in these Misc. Districts approved the following property tax measures.
- EMS: Renewal for 6 years (rate not to exceed $0.25) – ($0.25/$1,000)
- Hospital District #1: Permanent lid lift to $0.75/$1,000 - Health Care Services ($0.75/$1,000)
- Hospital District#2: Permanent lid lift to $0.50/$1,000 - Health Care Services ($0.50/$1,000)
- Northshore Park & Rec: 6 yr Replacement Levy for repair, maintenance and operation 0.60/1,000 ($0.05/$1,000)
- King County: 7-year AFIS Sr lid lift (not to exceed $.0275/$1,000)
- King County: 6-year Parks, Recreation, Trails, and Open Space Lid ($0.23290/$1,000)
