How to "piggyback" on King County contracts

Download the Cooperative Purchasing Agreement Form

Under RCW 39.34.030, local government agencies can utilize contracts from other jurisdictions through a process called "piggybacking." This process allows municipal governments to leverage contracts awarded by "host" agencies, thereby saving time and potentially securing better prices and terms than they might achieve independently.

To piggyback on a contract awarded by King County, please review the list of jurisdictions with approved Cooperative Purchasing Agreements provided below. These jurisdictions have already received authorization to utilize contracts established by King County.

If your entity does not currently have a Cooperative Purchasing Agreement Form, you can download one and have it signed by the appropriate authority. Once the form is signed, please email it to procurement.web@kingcounty.gov. King County will respond promptly after the Chief Procurement Officer signs the form and it is uploaded to the designated list.

To locate the specific contract you wish to piggyback on, refer to the Awarded Contracts Log, where King County publishes goods and services contracts resulting from the Invitation to Bid process. If your jurisdiction requires additional documents related to the contract, please send a request outlining your needs to procurement.web@kingcounty.gov.

It's important to note that your jurisdiction is responsible for initiating work or placing orders with the contractor; King County is not directly involved in this process. Additionally, the criteria for piggybacking are determined by your own municipal code and RCW, rather than by King County procedures. For more detailed information on this subject, please consult the MRSC website.
