Kohl-Welles condemns impending U.S. Supreme Court decision to reverse Roe v. Wade
Story
King County Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles released the following statement Tuesday in response to news reports of a draft decision from the U.S. Supreme Court that would overturn Roe v. Wade:
“Last night’s leaked draft Supreme Court opinion signaling the Court’s intention to overturn Roe v. Wade is appalling and should serve as a serious reminder that civil rights, equity, and justice are not guaranteed. These values must be defended vigorously as unfortunately they have been under attack almost daily over the past several years.
“I am the mother of five wonderful children. And as a mother, I know that the decision to have a child, or not have a child, is deeply personal, complex, and precious. In a country where many residents do not have access to health care, paid parental leave, or affordable places to live, the thought of forcing someone to carry a pregnancy to term, without consideration to their medical history or situation, the context of conception, their privacy, or their wishes, is nothing short of violent.
“Safe, accessible, and affordable abortions are a basic part of health care. The Supreme Court has recognized that for nearly 50 years, and this ruling would do nothing but cause harm to individuals who are already faced with an important decision. For now, we are protected here in Washington State due to I-120’s approval by the voters back in 1991, but we cannot take anything for granted. Safe abortion rights should be available throughout the country, not limited to a few states.
“Today, I add my voice to the chorus calling on members of Congress to take action as soon as possible, find a way to enshrine these rights in federal law, and protect our collective right to choose.”
