Story
King County Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles issued the following statement Friday in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling striking down Roe v. Wade:
“Today, the Supreme Court has unleashed an assault on 14th Amendment rights, including our right to bodily autonomy, by overturning Roe v. Wade. This move should worry every person in America. And when you feel that fire in your belly, don’t ignore it, channel it.
“The majority of people in the United States agree that pregnant people have the right to make their own reproductive health decisions and that we all have the right to privacy. The Supreme Court is protecting systems of power that enable them to control all of us. We won’t let them.
“I can tell you firsthand: we’ve been here before. And we called our legislators and connected with our communities and devised plans to fight back at every level and in every way — big and small. And that is what we will do again.
“While we do that, King County remains a safe place for comprehensive family planning services, including abortions. I’m pleased to join Councilmember Claudia Balducci in sponsoring Executive Constantine’s proposal to allocate $1 million to support abortion access.”
