Statement in Advance of Women’s Safety March at Courthouse

King County Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles is issuing the following statement in light of the recent attempted rape inside the King County Courthouse and in support of the March for Women’s Safety in the Workplace scheduled for Friday at noon in front of the King County Administration building.

“It is absolutely imperative that all employees, jurors, and visitors feel safe and are safe from physical and sexual violence in the King County Courthouse. Regardless of the purpose of anyone’s being there, it is essential that all are able to safely perform their work responsibilities or navigate essential King County services  – especially when exercising one’s right to seek justice.

“Although I am unable to join the march in person, I stand in solidarity with the employees and others making their voices heard. I stand with the woman assaulted, with survivors of gender-based violence overall, and with others who understandably may be experiencing a wide range of emotions in the wake of this assault. As a woman, an elected leader, and an employer, I commit to working to respond to these pressing concerns collaboratively, compassionately, and efficiently so as to ensure that the King County Courthouse is safe for all who come into it.”
