Dembowski thanks Mary’s Place, welcomes Lake City Partners to reopen Northshore shelter

King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski hosted representatives from the City of Kenmore and other partners on August 21st to announce and welcome a new senior women’s shelter in what was formerly the Mary’s Place Northshore shelter.

The new senior women’s shelter, which will be operated by Lake City Partners Ending Homelessness, is possible thanks to $675,000 in funding secured by Dembowski in King County’s spring supplemental budget.

Mary’s Place, which serves families experiencing homelessness, previously operated its Northshore shelter in the same location, a former King County Sheriff’s Office precinct building, but recently changed its model away from congregate shelter and decided to close their Kenmore location.

“Operating out of the county’s mothballed Kenmore precinct office, Mary’s Place has been a tremendous partner over the last seven years, welcoming over 500 families and nearly 1,000 children in our Northshore community and helping 191 families secure stable housing,” said Councilmember Rod Dembowski. “Unfortunately their move left virtually no emergency shelter space in North King County, so I went to work with City of Kenmore officials and Lake City Partners – which already successfully runs the Oaks shelter in Shoreline – to see if a new shelter could be opened in the Kenmore location. We then worked to identify $675,000 in the county’s budget to fund this project and I was thrilled to host today’s announcement event.” Read more about the Northshore shelter.

February 2024  |  Each year, the Council reorganizes to select committee leadership and membership. This year I am serving as Chair of the Council’s Transportation, Economy and Environment Committee. The Committee held its first meeting on January 16, 2024. The meeting included a briefing from Metro General Manager Michelle Allison which can be watched here, on Metro’s long-term goals which are centered around hiring more Metro drivers and providing the safest system possible for its riders and drivers.

This year, I plan to focus the committee’s work on protecting our waterways, preserving open space, fighting climate change locally, as well as ensuring Metro Transit is safe, reliable and meets the transportation needs of our riders. The Transportation, Economy and Environment Committee meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 9:30AM at the King County Courthouse Council Chambers. June 27, 2023  |  Loved stopping by the East African Senior Center Meal Program at the Northgate Community Center to talk about King County’s services and to share the good news of added funding I was able to secure in our recent budget for these culturally-appropriate meals. Enjoyed the Q&A session and the delicious lunch!
