Ombuds records you can request

The Office of the Ombuds has a limited scope. We can only respond to public records requests related to our work. This means complaints, concerns, and cases initiated by the Office of the Ombuds.

We investigate: 

  • Complaints of administrative misconduct by any Executive Branch employee
  • Alleged violations of the Employee Code of Ethic by any King County employee
  • Reports of governmental action and retaliation under the Whistleblower Protection Code
  • Possible violations of the Lobbyist Disclosure Code

How to request Obmuds records

If your request is for records outlined above, there are many ways you can request them.

If you are looking for another kind of record, please contact the appropriate group

  1. Submit a request through King County's Public Records Request Center (you will need to create an account).

  2. Complete a public records request form (74KB) and email it to Ombuds.PRA@kingcounty.gov.
  3. Call the Ombuds Public Records Officer: 206-477-1050 to request an appointment to view records in person. Appointments are available Monday through Friday (except holidays) from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Be sure your request includes a detailed description of the records you want and your contact information.

For example, if you filed a complaint with the Office of the Ombuds, the request might look like this: Provide the complete case file in Ombuds Case # [number].

What happens after I request records from the Ombuds?

Within 5 business days of receiving your request, we will:

  • Acknowledge your request
  • Estimate the time necessary to fulfill it
  • Provide the requested records, or
  • Deny all or part of the request, or redact part of the information, telling you why we can't disclose it
