King County Executive Girmay Zahilay

King County’s work is inspired and guided every day by what we call our True North: making this a welcoming community where every person can thrive.

Portrait of Executive Zahilay

Girmay Zahilay is the seventh elected King County Executive. He oversees one of the largest local governments in the country, leading more than 18,000 employees who provide services to 2.3 million residents. As the first immigrant, first refugee, and first millennial to hold the role of King County Executive, he is working to make county government more responsive to the people it serves.

As Executive, Girmay is focused on delivering his four main policy goals:

  • Breaking the Cycle: Addressing homelessness, addiction, and incarceration.

  • Building More: Expanding housing, child care, transit, and infrastructure.

  • Boots on the Ground: Making King County government more visible, connected, and community-driven.

  • Better Government: Delivering a government that is more transparent, efficient, and accountable.
