Murray Force Main Rehabilitation

The Murray Force Main Rehabilitation project will rebuild a section of a pressurized sewer pipe called a force main to maintain reliable service to West Seattle residents living near Lowman Beach Park.

Project description

King County is rebuilding a damaged sewer pipe to maintain reliable sewer service for West Seattle residents near Lowman Beach Park and protect public health and Puget Sound.

The Murray Pump Station has two pressurized sewer pipes, also known as force mains. These pipes run parallel under Beach Drive Southwest and help move sewage to West Point Treatment Plant, where it is cleaned and safely discharged into Puget Sound. In March 2022, one of the pressurized pipes broke due to severe corrosion. King County repaired about 800 feet of the damaged pipe at that time. This project will repair the remaining 350 feet of damaged pipe and install two air valves to help reduce pipe corrosion in the repaired pipe.

This work needs to occur during the dry season when wastewater flows are lower. Road and park restoration will occur in fall 2026 after the pipe is rebuilt.

What to expect during construction:

  • No interruption to wastewater service.
  • One-lane alternating traffic on Beach Drive SW, with steel plates in the road. Bicyclists should use extreme caution passing through the work area.
  • Lowman Beach Park playground, beach and sidewalks will remain open during construction.
  • Typical construction noise near work areas.
  • Street parking is restricted to construction during the posted hours. Please follow the parking sign instructions.

Project update

May 2026

Sewer work begins June 1 near Lowman Beach Park

Starting June 1, the King County Wastewater Treatment Division will begin repairing a sewer pipe near Lowman Beach Park. Repairing the pipe will protect reliable sewer service to your neighborhood. This work needs to happen during the summer when flows are lower and conditions are safer.

The work area begins from the park and continues north about a quarter of a mile or 400 meters on the southbound side of Beach Drive SW.

The current fenced off area at the park is for ongoing pump station valve replacement work. It will continue into June.

Road and park restoration will occur this fall and early winter after the pipe work is complete. We will keep sharing project updates with the community. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

What to expect in June

  • Work hours: Monday to Friday, 7 am to 7pm. The contractor may occasionally continue to work at later hours. There will be no noisy activity after 7 pm.
  • No interruption to wastewater service.
  • Most of the park will be open. Work areas and the sidewalk on the east side of the pipe work area will be closed.
  • Occasional one‑lane alternating traffic on Beach Drive SW while crews move vehicles and equipment around the work areas. Flaggers will direct traffic.
  • Construction vehicles moving between the Murray Wet Weather Facility and the work areas.
  • Temporary fencing at Lowman Beach Park.
  • Noise from the temporary pump and other construction activities.
  • Limited street parking along Beach Drive SW during posted hours. Please follow parking instructions.
