SE Kent-Kangley Intersection Improvement Project

Fall 2022 traffic safety improvements completed
Safety improvements were added to the intersection of SE Kent-Kangley Road and Landsburg Road SE/SE Ravensdale Way in summer/fall 2022. Larger view (3MB)
- A right-turn “slip lane” for eastbound drivers on SE Kent-Kangley Road to turn south onto SE Ravensdale Way. A traffic island helps separate vehicles that are turning right from vehicles headed in the east direction.
- A realigned SE Ravensdale Way gives northbound vehicles an additional nine feet to turn left onto westbound SE Kent-Kangley Road.
- A new crosswalk and improving existing crosswalks allows residents to park and safely access Ravensdale Park and other natural areas, the Ravensdale Market, etc.
These improvements did not affect the memorial for the Ravensdale Mine Explosion, nor will they affect access to the Ravensdale Market.
Overview
In fall 2022, King County will make additional temporary improvements to SE Kent-Kangley Road at the intersection of Landsburg Road SE/SE Ravensdale Way. These temporary improvements are intended to improve the turning ability of large vehicles on SE Kent-Kangley Road onto southbound SE Ravensdale Way, as well as for large vehicles traveling on SE Ravensdale Way turning west onto SE Kent-Kangley Road.
The fall 2022 improvements are scheduled nearly 1.5 years after King County turned this high-collision location into a four-way stop. This approach of making safety upgrades in stages is necessary until the county secures funding to install a permanent traffic calming safety improvement, such as a roundabout or traffic signal, at this intersection.
What has King County done so far?
In 2019, our Road Services Division conducted a study to improve traffic flow and reduce the high number of collisions at this intersection. The study identified two options to improve safety at this high-traffic intersection - installation of a roundabout or a traffic signal.
The study revealed the cost estimates for the two options are significantly higher than anticipated. Due to budget constraints, the county cannot afford either of these long-term options (roundabout or traffic signal) at this time.
In spring 2021, Road Services added two new stop signs with flashing, LED lights as a temporary measure to address safety concerns. LED lights were not installed at the two existing stop signs at SE Ravensdale Way and Landsburg Road SE because our study indicated those signs are effective in getting drivers to stop at the intersection.
In fall 2022, we added additional improvements including a “slip lane” to allow eastbound drivers on SE Kent-Kangley Road to turn south onto SE Ravensdale Way, a traffic island and a new crosswalk.
