Combat rising grocery prices by learning home gardening skills

Growing your own food can be a rewarding and cost-effective option as grocery prices are projected to keep climbing in 2025.

King County residents can learn how to grow their own food with the Garden Hotline to supplement their pantries and combat increased prices. The Garden Hotline has local events across King County that educate customers on how to be more self-sufficient through classes on topics like growing herbs naturally, pollinators and beneficial insects, smart watering, and composting.

Whether you live in an apartment or a house, growing your own food is possible even with limited space. Herbs like basil, parsley, and mint are great beginner-friendly options that can thrive in small containers and can be grown just as well indoors on a windowsill as they can outside in a garden. If you have a little more room, vegetables like tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, and peppers are all relatively easy to grow and don’t require a large garden or complicated setup. With just a few pots, a bit of sunlight, and regular watering, you can supplement your groceries with fresh, homegrown produce that will save you money while enjoying the satisfaction of growing your own food.

With these home gardening tips in mind, you can take charge of your family’s diet, ease your wallet, and bring yourself peace of mind knowing you can protect the health of your family.

If you have a question about gardening or are just looking for more information regarding any indoor or outdoor hazardous products, feel free to give us a call at 206-296-4692 or email us at haz.waste@kingcounty.gov. We are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
