Accessing Sealed Records Frequency Asked Questions

Only eligible parties can access sealed/confidential records. If you are an eligible party you can access these records by coming in person to the Clerk's Office and showing ID or submitting a KC Script Portal request and meeting virtually with the Clerk to verify your identity. Acceptable identification is: Current government-issued ID or passport. Sealed documents cannot be mailed without a court order.

The case may be confidential which means the case file is sealed per statute and the clerk’s office may not even confirm the existence of a case (such as adoptions and expunged juvenile cases). Please double check your case number.

Sealed/confidential means subject to limited access by statute, court rule or court order.

If you do not know the confidential case number, you will need to come into one of the King County Courthouses (Court Holidays, Clerk's Office Hours & Locations - King County) with your identification and a deputy clerk will assist you in finding the case number and determining if you have access to the confidential case. Acceptable identification includes government issued picture identification such as driver’s license or passport.

Per statute or court order, access may be limited to specific parties, attorneys and court appointed officials, participating in a case. In order to provide access to a sealed or confidential case or documents, the clerk’s office needs to verify your identity and confirm that you have authority to view and access the records. Acceptable forms of identification includes government issued picture identification such as a driver’s license or a passport.

You only need to verify your identity once a year. However, you will need to verify that you have authority to view every sealed or confidential case you would like access to. You will not need to participate in a zoom call to get authority once your identity is verified. You will however need to make a request via KC Script Portal or in person to have access to the sealed or confidential case. You will then be granted access to the sealed or confidential case for one year.

Some sealed documents have a higher level of sealing and therefore, a customer will need to request access to each enhanced document. Even if you are provided access to a sealed or confidential case for one year, you are not automatically granted access to enhanced sealed documents. For each enhanced sealed document, you will need to request access to it.

Some examples of sealed or confidential case types:

  • Adoption: RCW 26.33.330
  • Paternity: RCW 26.26A.500(2)
  • Mental Illness: RCW 71.05.620
  • Juvenile Dependency (includes At-Risk Youth, CHINS & Dependency): RCW 13.50.100
  • Confidential Name Changes: RCW 4.24.130(5)
