Story

The King County Council on Tuesday approved legislation sponsored by Councilmember Reagan Dunn that will begin the process of giving SE 184th St in Fairwood the honorary name Jaguar Way in recognition of Northwood Middle School’s mascot, the jaguar.

With the passage of Dunn’s legislation, the Department of Local Services' Roads Services Division will start notifying property owners along SE 184th St that the King County Council will be voting on the name change.

“With today’s action, we are one step closer to giving SE 184th Street a new name in celebration of Northwood Middle School, a treasured part of the Fairwood community,” Dunn said. “Since Northwood is expanding to include sixth grade this fall, this honorary road designation is a great way we can welcome these new young students to campus.”

Prior to passing the legislation, the Council heard testimony from students and administrators advocating for the passage of the motion.

“[Redesignating] the road name to Jaguar Way would provide us with a way to preserve school pride and give future families and students a warm welcome to the community,” eighth-grader Natalia Jackson said.

“Since 1996, Northwood has a rich history of educating students by building strong relationships with parents, students, and community partners – all focused on student success,” said Meghin Margel, Vice President of the Kent School Board, during her testimony. “Just like the jaguar was instituted as Northwood’s mascot by popular vote, this honorary designation is the result of the community’s desire to recognize Northwood for its positive impact on not just the KSD family of students, educators, staff, and families, but the greater Fairwood community.”

Now that the motion is passed, Dunn will introduce an ordinance that officially gives SE 184th St the honorary redesignation of Jaguar Way. The ordinance will be introduced at the next King County Council meeting on June 13.
