Story
The King County Council’s Transportation, Economy, and Environment Committee on Tuesday approved the first of three rounds of Parks Capital and Open Space Grants including more than $1,000,000 for the City of Kent. The city received funding for three projects, which include the Salt Air Vista Park Renovation, the Morrill Meadows Park Renovation, and regional trails enhancements to signage along the Green River Trail and the Interurban Trail.
This competitive grant program is part of the voter-approved 2020-2025 Parks Levy and seeks to assist eligible entities with open space acquisition, active recreation, passive recreation, and local trails.
“All residents of King County should have access to outdoor spaces to play, enjoy nature, and relax, but we know that residents in South King County don’t always have access to such spaces,” said King County Councilmember Dave Upthegrove. “With this County funding, the City of Kent will be able to make improvements throughout its park system and I’m proud to that King County could partner in their efforts.”
In August 2019, King County residents overwhelmingly supported the Parks Levy which provides funding support for parks and open space throughout the County.
“Improvements to city and regional green space is a key action in addressing health disparities and climate impacts,” said Julie Parascondola, Kent Parks Director. “With this County funding, The City of Kent can increase its ongoing efforts of making these city assets more functional and accessible for all residents.”
The legislation will go before the full council for final approval in the coming weeks.
