King County Councilmember Dave Upthegrove announced on Tuesday that the Renton Senior Center will receive an additional $115,000 of County funding as part of the County’s 2021-2022 biennial budget.

The funding is part of the voter-approved Veterans, Seniors and Human Services levy and adds to the original funding of $90,000 already received by the Renton Senior Center.

“Supporting our seniors is more important than ever as we face down this pandemic,” Upthegrove said. “These funds will help the Renton Senior Center continue to provide virtual programming and meal programs ensuring seniors can stay connected and healthy.”

Since March, the Renton Senior Center has pivoted its work to meet public health guidelines while still ensuring seniors have the social and nutritional support they need. Home delivered meals, positivity parades, and Zoom events including bingo and yoga are just some of the examples of programming changes made by the center over the last eight months.

“These additional funds will help us continue to help our Renton seniors during these challenging times,” said Carrie Nass, City of Renton’s Recreation and Neighborhood Division Manager. “Councilmember Upthegrove has been a strong supporter of the Renton Senior Center for years and has helped us fund a number of projects including new equipment, updates to our well-used coffee bar and assisting with our World Health Organization/AARP Age-Friendly City designation.  We are grateful for his continued advocacy for the people of Renton.”
