Road Safety Improvements planned for Fairwood Community

The Metropolitan King County Council gave its unanimous approval to a six year capital improvement program for the King County Road Services Division that includes a key road improvement project in the unincorporated community of Fairwood.

“Ensuring the county is using its limited resources to invest in the safety of our roads is one of my top priorities,” said Council Vice Chair Reagan Dunn, who represents Fairwood on the County Council.

Funds to install a roundabout at the intersection of SE 176th St and SE 171 Way were included in the budget adopted by the Council on Nov. 20. The Road Services Division identified the intersection as a high collision location. A roundabout would slow speeding traffic and reduce conflicts from congestion.

Work on this project is expected to start this year.

The road safety improvements follow the approval of two flood reduction projects in the Fairwood community approved earlier this month by the King County Flood Control District.

Nearly $500,000 will go toward replacing approximately 200 feet of an existing 4-foot diameter pipe system that conveys Molasses Creek through a park area and under the Fairwood Crest Division 11 neighborhood. The project is located in neighborhood park area on the east side of 132nd Place SE just south of NE 164th Street.

Another $1.5 million will go towards replacing a culvert on Southeast 162nd Avenue. The project will analyze replacement options for the failed culvert that impacts ten nearby properties while making the structure fish passable.
