Council approves new ballot drop off boxes in District 2

Summary

New election ballot drop boxes approved by the King County Council will make it easier for voters in Council District 2 to cast their ballots in future elections.

Story

The Metropolitan King County Council today approved a plan from the Department of Elections to place ballot drop-off boxes in neighborhoods throughout Council District 2 to increase access to voting.

“I’m pleased that we’re using equity and underrepresentation criteria when considering where to place voter ballet drop boxes as a means to improve access,” said Councilmember Larry Gossett. “Mail in ballots are a convenience for some, but for too many voters, especially in underrepresented communities and communities of color, mail in ballots have shut them out of a fundamental right in our democracy. We must increase accessibility for all our voters, especially those who have grown to believe government does not work in their best interest.”

Those new locations are:

  • New Holly Library
  • Skyway Library
  • Rainier Community Center (Exact location TBD)
  • Beacon Hill Library
  • University of Washington

With the transition to vote by mail, the Council requested a plan from the Department of Elections to increase the return of ballots by voters. These locations are part of the 43 drop box sites selected as part of the requested plan.

All of these locations will be in place for the November general election.
