Fairwood, an unincorporated community nestled between the cities of Kent, Renton and Maple Valley, celebrated its 50th Anniversary August 27th. In recognition of the occasion, Metropolitan King County Council Vice Chair Reagan Dunn, joined by the King County Parks and Recreation Division, hosted a day-long festival at Petrovitsky Park.
“Fairwood is a thriving community,” said Dunn. “Since King County acts as the local government for Fairwood, I wanted to make sure this important community milestone did not go unnoticed. I thoroughly enjoyed working with local leaders to both honor the area’s history and recognize the many diverse organizations that support Fairwood’s families, residents, and students.”
Approximately 30,000 residents live in the unincorporated community of Fairwood. As an unincorporated community King County provides Fairwood with its local government services.
The day included a 5K Fun Run race organized by the Kentridge High School Cross Country Team, a concert featuring Fairwood’s own R Street Band, a demonstration of local first responders from the King County Sheriff’s Department, Fire District #40, King County Emergency Management Services, King County Metro, Renton Emergency Communications, and the Seattle Metropolitan Police Museum.
Finally a Movie Night sponsored by Alaska Airlines, brought area residents out to Petrovitsky Park to watch Back to the Future, a film voted on by the community. Over all, close to 1000 residents were part of the many events the day had to offer.
“A very nice event provided by King County to the residents of the Fairwood area on their 50th anniversary,” said Jim Canterbury, President of Fairwood Greens Homeowners Association. “Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves and especially the Fire and Sheriff Departments vehicles and history.”
The day was supported by generous contributions from title sponsor UW Medicine, Alaska Airlines, Cedar River Water District, Comprehensive Dental, Fairwood Golf & Country Club, King County Library System, Puget Sound Energy, Rosie Rourke– Managing Broker of John L. Scott, Soos Creek Water District, and Taco Time.
