King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn today joined school district leaders, elected officials, students and community members to break ground on the new Tahoma High School.

“It is an honor to take part in this momentous occasion,” said Dunn, who represents the residents of the Tahoma School District on the County Council. “This location, formerly owned by the County, provides a site that meets the district desire to centrally locate the new high school and regional learning center.”

The Tahoma School District is a rapidly growing district that needs space to expand and ease overcrowding. Councilmember Dunn sponsored legislation last October that authorized the County to sell a portion of the County’s Summit Pit property in Maple Valley to the Tahoma School District to enable construction of the new high school.

The Council acted on Dunn’s legislation expeditiously to help keep on track the Tahoma School District’s goal to have the new high school ready for students by 2017.

One of the entrances to the new high school will be provided via an easement over property still owned by the King County Roads Division. To insure the location would be safe for students and staff at the new high school, King County’s Roads Services Division moved its regional roads maintenance shop, and road waste processing and recycling activities offsite.

“I look forward to working with the Tahoma School District and the City of Maple Valley to develop a plan for the remaining County property that supports both the District’s and City’s long term goals,” said Dunn.
