Fairwood Greens and Woodside Home Owners Associations Selected for Community Service Area Grants
Summary
Story
King County Community Service Area grants for District 9 were announced today by Metropolitan King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn, who represents the Fairwood community on the County Council. Fairwood Greens Home Owners Association and Woodside Home Owners Association were both recipients. Both organizations are located in the unincorporated community of Fairwood near Renton and Kent.
“King County serves as the local government for the over 20,000 residents living within the unincorporated community of Fairwood,” said Dunn. “By helping to fund community events and the upgrading of ageing community property, King County is helping to build a stronger sense of community in Fairwood.”
The Fairwood Greens Homeowners Association was awarded $2,000 to assist with their annual Neighborhood Day. Neighborhood Day is held within its community park and the association provides food and entertainment geared to the children of the Fairwood Neighborhood and surrounding communities.
“The support of King County makes a real impact for our community, one of the largest of the County’s community service areas,” said Jim Canterbury, President of the Fairwood Greens Homeowner’s Association. “In our seventh year, the Neighborhood Days event was initially planned to instill a ‘sense of community’ among those living in the unincorporated Fairwood area and it remains our mission to provide a place and time to meet neighbors, establish friendships, and enjoy the day.”
The Woodside Home Owners Association received a $2,500 grant to assist in the replacement of twelve pet waste stations in the Woodside Community. The original receptacles were installed approximately 12 years ago and are currently in a state of disrepair.
"The Woodside Homeowners Association is grateful to King County for their generous contribution to assist in replacing corroded pet waste stations located throughout our community,” said Amanda Heins, Treasurer of the Woodside Homeowners Association. “These receptacles have received heavy use over the years from Woodside residents and other dog walkers in the local area as McGarvey Park open space, containing 11 miles of varied terrain trails, which adjoins the eastern edge of our community."
The King County Community Service Areas (CSA) offer expanded ways for the County to engage with the 255,000 county residents who live outside city boundaries. There are more than 70,000 residents of Council District 9 living in CSAs.
The grant programs within the CSA’s are available through a competitive application process. The grants must be used to fund community projects that offer unincorporated area residents in the Community Service Areas an opportunity to participate and be more connected in their communities. A total of $60,000 was awarded for projects in 2014.
