Phillips secures funding for Ballard Senior Center in King County’s 2012 budget

Summary

Funding helps keep senior centers’ doors open for seniors

Story

Low income seniors struggling in these difficult economic times will be able to continue relying on the Ballard Senior Center thanks to funding secured by Larry Phillips, who represents Ballard on the Metropolitan King County Council. The Council today adopted King County’s 2012 budget that included $20,000 for the Ballard Senior Centers.

“Low income seniors depend upon the Ballard Senior Center for meals and activities and the Ballard Senior Center depends on funding from King County to keep providing essential programs,” said Phillips. “I am pleased we were once again able to fund the Ballard Senior Center which plays such a valuable role enabling seniors to be engaged in our community and connected to services that improve their quality of life.”

The Ballard Senior Center must raise 72 percent of its operating budget. King County’s contribution of $20,000 in 2012 represents a 25 percent increase over the county’s 2011 contribution.

The senior center serves over 4,000 individuals aged fifty and up. They provide nutritional meals, physical activities, wellness and health screening services, social work support, and socialization activities for seniors.
