The Metropolitan King County Council recognized the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Municipal League of King County today and proclaimed May 24, 2010 to be Municipal League of King County Day.

“The Municipal League has been a strong advocate for open and transparent government,” said Council Chair Bob Ferguson, who presented the proclamation. “I am pleased to recognize and honor the many accomplishments of the League, which helped advocate for the creation of the King County Charter.”

“For 100 years, the Municipal League has served the citizens of King County in making government more accountable and advocating for reform when needed,” said Councilmember Reagan Dunn, who was a member of the honorary host committee for the Municipal League’s centennial celebration dinner. “One of the many jobs they do is provide every voter with the facts and information they need to make informed decisions regarding their elected officials and they do this at the highest level. Our community is richer because of the good work the Municipal League continues to do.”

Founded a century ago, the Municipal League of King County is a volunteer-driven, nonpartisan organization that promotes open, effective, and accountable local government and improves the caliber of public officials and public decision-making. The “Muni” League plays an important role in local government through activities such as evaluating politicians, rating candidates for public office, and publishing the results in a Voter’s Guide. The League also coordinates a team of citizens who review and make recommendations on measures facing King County voters and present a synopsis of the arguments for and against ballot measures.

In addition, the League recognizes accomplishments of elected officials, public employees, citizen groups, the news media, and individual citizens who make outstanding contributions to the community and better government.

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, the Municipal League of King County, founded a century ago on May 23, 1910, is a volunteer-driven, nonpartisan organization that promotes open, effective, and accountable local government and improves the caliber of public officials and public decision making; and

WHEREAS, the League evaluates politicians, analyzes issues, and shapes policy decisions through activities such as rating candidates for public office and publishing the results in a Voter’s Guide; and

WHEREAS, the League coordinates a team of citizens who review and make recommendations on measures facing King County voters and present a synopsis of the arguments for and against ballot measures; and

WHEREAS, the League monitors a range of issues at the local level, including long-range studies on the Port of Seattle, land use challenges facing King County, and transportation issues; and

WHEREAS, the League recognizes accomplishments of elected officials, public employees, citizen groups, the news media, and individual citizens who make outstanding contributions to the community and better government; and

WHEREAS, the League was a strong advocate for reforming King County government, and its efforts led to the creation of the King County Charter; and

WHEREAS, the League has developed a reputation for thoughtful, high-quality work and will continue to promote civic spiritedness and a community of public-minded citizens in the coming years;

NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Metropolitan King County Council, hereby proclaim May 24, 2010 as

MUNICIPAL LEAGUE OF KING COUNTY DAY

in King County upon the occasion of the League’s centennial.
