Hiring process
Our Civil Service hiring process for Communications Specialist and Dispatcher positions involves several steps. Applicants will receive email notifications regarding their status throughout. This process takes approximately 4-6 months to complete.
Hiring process steps
-
Take the Dispatch exam
Sign up and take the Dispatch exam through Public Safety Testing (PST). Plan for approximately 3.5 hours. The cost of the test is covered by KCSO; however, there is an Applicant Liability Waiver & Release Agreement that requires a notary's signature. The cost for the notary can be paid for through the PST site: Prepaid Notary for $10. Alternatively, your bank may provide this service for free. A typing test is also required (35 wpm with 90% accuracy). More information regarding the exam requirements can be found here: Exam Requirements. -
Submit your application
If you successfully pass PST's written exam and typing test, submit your application and complete any supplemental questions. -
Application review
Applications and supplemental questions are reviewed by HR to determine how closely candidates meet the qualifications of the position. -
Oral boards
If you meet qualifications, you will be scheduled for oral boards, which is essentially a panel interview (3-4 interviewers). During the interview, you'll typically be asked about your work history, skills or experience relevant to this position, as well as situational or behavioral questions. -
Civil Service Eligibility List
Your scores for your testing and oral boards are compiled and candidates are added to a Civil Service Eligibility List. Top scoring candidates are contacted first to begin their background check. Background checks for civil service positions are much more extensive than a normal background; candidates are typically given two weeks to complete it. If you have questions or concerns prior to starting the background, please reach out to the HR Analyst, Sara Rogers at: sarrogers@kingcounty.gov. -
Polygraph test
Candidates who pass the background check are scheduled for a polygraph test.
-
Medical exam and psych test
Candidates who pass the polygraph test are scheduled for a medical exam and psych test. This is the final step prior to onboarding. HR will reach out directly to assist with onboarding.
