Interbay sewer and odor control upgrade

The Interbay Sewer and Odor Control Upgrade Project will replace aging sewer pipes in Seattle’s Interbay neighborhood and add new odor control technology.

Project description

King County plans to upgrade an aging sewer pipe in Seattle’s Interbay neighborhood. The existing pipe was built in 1967 and is nearing the end of its service life. New odor control technology will be added to the system while the sewer pipe upgrade is underway. Major construction is expected to begin in 2024. When complete, the sewer will provide reliable service for another 50 years or more.

General project updates

Road and sidewalk closures: West Armory Way and West Wheeler Street. Over the last few months, crews have been working near West Armory Way to prepare for construction on a new odor control facility and have started work on the above-ground temporary bypass pipe. As work progresses, ongoing and upcoming closures are necessary to accommodate crews and construction vehicles within the work.

Temporary above-ground sewer pipe installation begins as early as mid-October. Crews have continued making progress on the Interbay Sewer and Odor Control Upgrade Project and will soon begin a new phase of work. Starting as early as Monday, October 14, and continuing until Summer 2025, crews will construct a temporary above-ground bypass pipeline. The pipe will extend from the Interbay Pump Station to just north of the Interbay Golf Center.
