PEP (Post-exposure prophylaxis)
Information and resources to prevent HIV with PEP.
PEP (Post-exposure prophylaxis) is medication that may prevent HIV after a possible exposure by a needle stick or condomless sex.
PEP is for emergency situations only.
PEP must be started within 72 hours (3 days) after exposure.

Getting PEP
Talk right away to your health care provider, an emergency room provider, or an urgent care provider about PEP if you think you've recently been exposed to HIV during condomless sex, or through sharing needles, syringes, or other equipment to inject drugs.
Remember, the sooner you start PEP, the better. If you're prescribed PEP, you'll need to take it daily for 28 days.

Paying for PEP
Harborview Medical Center will assure you can get PEP regardless of your ability to pay. The cost of PEP ranges from $600 to over $1,000. Medicaid and many other health insurance plans cover PEP in full or in part. If you don't have insurance, talk to your medical provider about available drug assistance programs.
